Early Billfish
July 24, 2009We were pleasantly surprised last week to hear of a small Black Marlin caught and released just west of the Granit Islands in Melville Bay. Several Billfish have been sighted, caught and released in the bay over past years, but none so early in the season. Another Billfish, confirmed as a sailfish, was also spotted on the same day. These fish have been feeding on the acres of bait presently frequenting the Melville Bay area. Check out these bait schools and have a trawl with small deep divers and metal slices for Spanish Mackerel and Queenfish. A couple of anglers have been reporting good captures of Jewfish off Wallaby and Mackerel off West Woody on floating baits. Some Queenfish were landed off town beach near the eastern rocks but these, although small, are ideal for rigging baits. Watch out for the south easterly winds from mid morning, however anglers who head out early are returning good results considering the time of year.
Some good feedback from members on the previous announcement at the beginning of July, of the reduced bag limits for recreational anglers. This sensible and responsible step forward to protecting and preserving fishing stocks in Northern Territory waters was been welcomed, albeit cautiously. Members of the Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club (NRSFC) have been fishing the “2 fish per species per angler per day” rule in competitions for several years and will not notice any change in tournament formats.
A reminder for NRSFC membership has been sent out, along with nominations for the AGM on the 27th of August next month. New residents and past members can drop into Gove Tackle and Outdoor for a 2009 – 2010 membership forms.
The NRSFC will be joining many other local Clubs and Community groups at this year’s Gove Peninsular Festival on the 1st of August. With only 2 weeks to go, preparations are nearing completion for the float parade, Gove Olympics, stall and boat display, however we would like to see some more parade entries and volunteers step forward. Don’t forget the kids bike section of the parade for our junior members. If you can participate or assist, please call Derek on 0438 309 054 Any contribution or help out at the stall for an hour or two at the festival ,or would like to put your trailer boat in the display and parade, will be greatly appreciated. Once again call Derek for more information. The Club (as usual) will be happy to “feed and water” those helping out throughout the day.
The NRSFC will have a display of tackle from GTO and have members on hand to share fishing tips and answer any questions. Several free entry competitions will be held throughout the day, along with a special draw for new 2009 – 2010 memberships received to date and registered on the day at the festival. So call on down to Hindle oval and visit the NRSFC site and join in all the fun and activities
Until next week, tight lines.
Regards,
Peter Cox

Countdown to the Festival
Well you can set your weekend watch on the south easterly winds at present. Saturday and Sunday saw the strongest winds for the week with white caps a plenty out wide. Several anglers fished the bay and rock wall with mixed results. A few undersized Barra and Queenfish with the odd small Mackerel thrown in for good measure. Other club members headed for the creeks and scored some Barra and mud crabs. Stacy Cox landed her first barra last weekend and has vowed to return for the elusive 1 mtr specimen – watch out David, are the future boys fishing trips threatened ? Well done Stacy. It’s good to see some of our lady members getting amongst it.
Still heaps of bait fish frequenting the Melville Bay area. As we mentioned last week, these bait schools are worth a trawl with small deep divers and metal slices. Let us know if you spot any more Billfish in the Bay. Wallaby beach and West Woody are still working well, along with the eastern rocks of town beach.
The NRSFC is looking for members and interested anglers to run an information stall at this years Gove Peninsular Festival on the 1st of August. For those with a sense of humour, how about entering the Gove Olympics fun sports competition ? The club will pay your team entry for the Gove Olympics and the chance to win some great prizes. We also invite those with trailer boats interested in joining in the fun of the Festival Parade to drop the club a line. Derek Endersby is coordinating the club’s activities on the day, so give him a call on 0438 309 054 or call into Gove tackle and Outdoors.
Don’t forget the kids bike section of the parade for our junior members. Any contribution or help out at the stall for an hour or two at the festival will be greatly appreciated. Once again call Derek for more information. The Club (as usual) will be looking after hungry and thirsty members throughout the day.
Several free entry competitions will be held on the day. One such competition will be rewarding new 2009 – 2010 members. If you are already renewed your membership, or do so at the Festival, you can fill out an entry form for our membership rewards draw. First prize is a XXXX Gold esky followed by several runner up prizes of fishing reels, rods and tackle. So call on down to Hindle oval and visit the NRSFC site and join in all the fun and activities.
Until next week, tight lines.
Regards,
Peter Cox
